Open Source Software in Libraries Webinar

Today we held our open source software in libraries webinar for a great group of SLA Members. One question asked was if we could install Chrome on Windows 8 apparently you can, but it might be terribly easy! Here’s an article/video I found to answer that question.

And here are my slides:

SLA Princeton/Trenton: Practical Open Source Software for Libraries Webinar by Nicole Engard

March 1, 2013
12:00 pmto1:00 pm

Friday, March 1, 2013 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM EST

The library community is a buzz about open source software (OSS). What will it mean to our libraries? Would it help if you knew that it is not just about programming, but a philosophy? This class will give you the facts about OSS by not only introducing you to what OSS is and what it means for libraries, but also by providing attendees with a toolbox of OSS products to use in their libraries.

Nicole C. Engard is the Vice President of Education at ByWater Solutions. Her primary role at ByWater Solutions is to educate librarians about open source software with a focus on the Koha ILS. In addition to her daily responsibilities, Nicole keeps the library community up to date on web technologies via her website “What I Learned Today…” (www.web2learning.net) and volunteers as a community moderator on opensource.com. In 2007, Nicole was named one of Library Journal’s Movers & Shakers and in 2009 she was the editor of “Library Mashups,” a book published by Information Today, Inc. and in 2010 she authored “Practical Open Source Software for Libraries,” a book published by Chandos Inc. and in 2012 the second edition of “The Accidental Systems Librarian” which she worked on with Rachel Singer Gordon was released.

President’s Message

Last night a small number of chapter members and guests were treated to a short tour of the Mudd Manuscript Library at Princeton University by the Archivist, Daniel Linke. We then had the unique opportunity to view and discuss seven important archival documents from both the Public Policy and Princeton University Archive collections. It was a fascinating evening! We then enjoyed dinner at Triumph Brewery Company.

This will be my last message to you as president of the chapter. I have enjoyed working with many of you during the last two years and hope that we  provided  interesting and worthwhile programs, as well as opportunities to network and socialize.  Our new board members were officially voted in and take office on January 1, 2013.  Please give our new president, Louise Deis, and board members  Pat Dawson, Willow Dressel and Susan Hofman your support and help next year.  As past president, I will be available to guide and advise them.

I thank all of those who supported  my presidency by attending meetings, helping with program planning and supporting my efforts.

I wish all Princeton-Trenton SLA Chapter members a safe and enjoyable holiday season and all the best in 2013!

Sincerely,

Zana Etter

Chapter Celebrates its 45th Anniversary!

On Thursday, October 18th at the Chauncey Conference Center at ETS in Princeton,   members enjoyed a wonderful evening to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the Princeton-Trenton SLA Chapter, which began in 1967. After a cocktail hour which gave old and new members a chance to mingle and enjoy photos from earlier events, thanks to our archivist, Jan Watterworth, we heard my short presentation on our chapter’s history. After a champagne toast and a tasty four-course served dinner, we listened to our speaker, Diane Hofman, who entertained us with a look back at  her long career with database vendors and her work as a consultant.  Her words of wisdom and lessons learned gave us all hope for the future!

We then gave away six door prizes and the table settings before ending the night with the hope that this chapter will continue to thrive. Each attendee also received a USB drive as a gift. Many thanks to our two sponsors, LibraryLinkNJ (Cheryl O’Connor joined us) and Proquest/Dialog. Thanks also go to a former chapter president, Janet Weiss for securing sponsors for all of our meetings this year!

Be sure to attend our last meeting of the year on Wednesday, November 28 at Princeton University for a talk from the archivist and a tour of the Mudd Archive Library before joining us for dinner afterward at Triumph Brewery across the street.  You should be receiving the registration form very soon, but mark the date on your calendars!

Hope to see many of you there!

Zana Etter, 2012 PTSLA Chapter President

President’s Message

On Wednesday, May 16 , chapter members and guests met at Rider University to hear Robert Lackie’s informative presentation “Protecting Your Digital Footprint at Work, Home and on the Job.” We also presented the Rosemary Allen Little Award to Vidya Subramanian, a Rutgers University SCI student.  Joanne Roukens attended the meeting as representative from  LibraryLink NJ, our sponsor for the evening.

The executive board met in April and we decided to go forward with the decision to consider a chapter name change.  We solicited suggestions from our membership and then emailed a link to a short survey for chapter members to vote on their three preferences. We plan to leave this survey open for voting for awhile to allow time for everyone to express their opinion before we tally the votes.  If you have not yet voted,  please complete the 4 question survey soon!

I attended the Library Associates meeting at Rutgers University on May 8 and reported on chapter activities. The library school is engaged in a new student evaluation pilot program and looks forward to working with the new university president. Later that day, I  attended  New Jersey SLA Chapter’s Alice Rankin Lecture given by Joanne Lustig from Mathematica, entitled “Info Pros in 2012: Eyes Wide Open.”

Louise Deis, our Program Chair will be attending the SLA Annual Conference in Chicago from July 15-18, and will be sending email to announce a date for the planning meeting we hold every summer to discuss ideas for programs for next year.  We encourage anyone interested to attend this important session.

We hope to hold a kick-off meeting soon to plan a special event for our 45th anniversary and we anticipate holding a dinner sometime later in the year to celebrate this milestone.  If you are interested in helping us, contact Louise at lfdeis@princeton.edu

Our joint meeting with the New Jersey SLA Chapter will be held on the Rutgers University New Brunswick campus on Thursday, September 20. The speaker will be Brian Kernighan from Princeton University’s Computer Science Department.

Enjoy the summer weather and have safe and pleasant vacations! I hope to see many of you at our planning meetings and future chapter programs in the fall.

Sincerely,

Zana Etter, 2012 P-T SLA President

President’s Message

Dear Members,
Last Monday some of us enjoyed hearing John LeMasney discuss the new social media tool “Pinterest” at Princeton University. For those of you who missed the meeting, our Web Master Nicole Engard has kindly posted her notes and links to the presentation.
Our next meeting will be held at Rider University in Lawrenceville on Wednesday, May 16 when Robert Lackie will provide information on Internet Security. Please try to join us!
In January, Louise Deis, our Program Chair and I enjoyed attending the SLA Leadership Summit in Atlanta, Georgia, where we met other chapter officers and discussed many interesting ideas for chapter activities. My brief article about the summit will be published soon in Library Hi-Tech News by Emerald Publishing (volume 29, issue 2) and I will post the link once it is available.
Our chapter will celebrate our 45th anniversary this year and I would like to organize an event to mark the occasion. We still need to formulate a small committee to work on details, so send me any ideas on theme, speakers or venues (email me at zanaett77@yahoo.com) If you would like to help, let me know. We are hoping to hold a dinner sometime in either June or October.
The executive board will meet on April 11 for our first board meeting. Please send me any concerns, ideas or suggestions before that date so that we can add them to the agenda.
We still have several unfilled chair positions. If anyone is interested in volunteering to be chair of Employment, Archives, Continuing education, Public Relations or Sponsorship, contact me.
Don’t forget to register for the SLA Annual Conference which will be held in Chicago July 15-18 if you plan to attend.
The NJLA Conference will be held June 4-6 at the new Revel Hotel in Atlantic City, and they will extend member rates to our chapter members.
Enjoy the spring weather and beautiful flowers. I will report on the board meeting discussions in my next message, and I hope to see many of you at the meeting in May!
Sincerely,
Zana Etter, 2012 P-T SLA Chapter President
